Many seniors and people with disabilities are no longer able to do home repairs themselves and may not have the financial ability to pay for these repairs. REACH Community Development, a private nonprofit organization in Portland, provides basic repairs to make homes safe and accessible. Since 1996 REACH's Community Builders Program has provided more than 2,500 free home repairs to more than 1,000 seniors and people with disabilities.

Individual and group volunteers have always helped with the year-round home repair projects. The Paint & Repair-a-thon, REACH's flagship volunteer event, benefited from the work of 42 trades professionals who completed over 65 critical repairs to improve the living conditions for 20 homeowners in 2007. The one-day event also inspired many participating businesses to continue volunteering and sponsoring CBP activities.

The Community Builders Program is funded by the Portland Development Commission, the Portland Bureau of Housing and Community Development and business sponsors like Chown Hardware, BELFOR, WaMu, and Lease Crutcher Lewis.
