Fashion's Night Out is an unprecedented global initiative created to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence, and boost the fashion industry's economy. In the United States, the program is a collaboration between American Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company, and the City of New York. In September 2010, Fashion's Night Out returned to New York City and launched in cities nationwide to put the fun back in shopping with designer appearances, live windows, celebrity guests and other special events.
The Downtown Marketing Initiative and Portland Business Alliance applied and were approved to be a Fashion's Night Out host city. Other host cities included New York, Paris, Milan, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
Portland's Fashion's Night Out took place on September 8, 2011, with activities hosted at participating retailers and at Director Park in downtown Portland. All events were open to the public and free of charge. Activities at Director Park included fashion shows that ran every 30 minutes, music by DJ Mr. MuMu, free pedicab rides to participating retailers, and goody bags featuring American Express Gift Cards (available with a $150 qualifying purchase). Additionally, raffle tickets for a "Downtown Fashionista" package, were sold to benefit New Avenues for Youth. The Downtown Fashionista package included gift certificates to hotels, restaurants, salons and other participating retailers.
