Leadership Portland program
presented by
Leadership Portland was created by the Portland Business Alliance to provide individuals from its member firms with the skills and understanding necessary for future leadership positions with companies, civic organizations and government in the Portland region. Leadership Portland refines and develops leadership skills through participation in interactive exercises and a challenging curriculum. Class participants will gain an understanding of how the community works and issues that challenge the economic growth and stability of the region. Applications for the class are available online in January. The class is selected in May and the program begins with a reception in the fall. Participants attend classes one day per month from October through May and there is a ceremony in June.
The application deadline for participation in the Leadership Portland program has past. All applications are now being reviewed and participants will be notified of acceptance no later than May 16, 2008.

Class Projects
The community impact projects are a major component of Leadership Portland. Teams identify a need within the community, align themselves with a community partner and produce a project that results in the betterment of the community.

Class Selection Criteria
A selection committee chooses participants based on a completed application and references submitted by the applicant. The program seeks representation from a cross-section of the Portland business community taking into consideration sex, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, size and type of business, non-profit status, etc. Therefore, preference will be given to candidates who, in addition to their potential for leadership, would contribute to the overall diversity of the class. Participants must have a commitment to community service and civic involvement. Class size is limited to 36 participants. It is not unusual for the Alliance to receive many more applications than there are places in the class.
Requirements for participation:
- Because the class is built on participation and group dynamics attendance is required at the two-day retreat, the eight education days (8 am–5 pm) and graduation. Missing days or partial days may result in dismissal without refund.
- Completion of a community service project.
- Applicants must have the full support of their employer as evidenced by their signature on the application.
Application Process:
- Send in a completed application by Thursday, April 24, 2008. Include:
- A letter of recommendation from your employer and a sponsor or community leader.
