FROM
THE CHAIR
1. A
safe downtown is good for the whole region
By
Sam Brooks, Chair, Alliance Board of Directors
One of
the Alliance's missions has always been to be the leading
voice and service provider for a prosperous central city.
Whether your business is located downtown or in an outlying
area of the Portland region, your business is affected by
the central city - its prosperity, development and image.
In the
past several years, the Alliance has advocated for a strong
and vibrant central city with an emphasis on livability issues
such as crime and cleanliness. Last month we saw that these
efforts have not been in vain. The Alliance released
statistics that showed that downtown has seen a 16 percent
crime reduction last year, part of a continuing downward trend.
In the past three years, crime has lowered by almost a third
(29 percent).
This is
good news for all Portland businesses, large and small. Downtown
is an economic driver for the whole region, and a vibrant
central city benefits the business community as a whole. This
achievement would not be possible without the downtown property
owners whose self-imposed fees go toward keeping the streets
clean, removing roughly 2,000 graffiti tags a month and providing
extra security throughout the Business Improvement District
through Alliance's Clean and Safe program.
To take
things a step further, the Alliance and downtown owners partnered
with the mayor's office, City Council, Central City Concern
and the Portland Police Bureau to reduce the number of livability
crimes committed by chronic offenders. This partnership has
reduced crime in this offender group by 71 percent.
We thank
everyone who has been involved and lent support to this effort.
By working together these groups and downtown property owners
and businesses are creating an even better downtown that benefits
all of us in the Portland region.

5. Trish
Presting celebrates 30 years with Alliance
In
February 1978, Trish Presting (then Trish Bacon) started with
the Portland Chamber of Commerce as a clerk/typist. Little
did she know that over the years she would become such an
integral part of the staff and a resource for so many people
looking for information about Portland.
"When
I was referred to the chamber from the Oregon Employment Office,
I really did not know what to expect," said Presting. "For
three years, I was a typist and then I was given an opportunity
to create an Information Center and that is where I found
what I like to do - helping people find answers to their questions
about Portland."
Presting
now serves as the Information Center Coordinator and is one
of the two office receptionists, answering roughly 150 calls
per day, which means Presting has answered more than a million
questions from callers during the past 30 years. Presting
can answer almost any question about Portland - from the outrageous
to the mundane, Presting has heard it all.
"Trish
is truly a treasure," said Sam Brooks, Chair of the Alliance.
"She was a friendly face 21 years ago when I first joined
the board and she is still that warm, kind person who is always
ready to help."

DOWNTOWN
7. Downtown
Portland's crime drop continues for third consecutive year
Last month,
the Alliance released 2007
crime statistics, which show a 16 percent decrease in
crime in downtown Portland last year. This decrease is the
third consecutive year that downtown Portland has seen a decline
in crime by almost a third - 29 percent - over the last three
years.
In November
2005, the Alliance joined with Mayor Potter's office, Central
Precinct and Central City Concern to provide a treatment option
for chronic low-level criminal offenders, which has resulted
in a 71 percent decrease in criminal activity among that offender
group since the program began. Additionally, downtown property
owners increased the amount of funding for security to hiring
seven additional Clean and Safe officers who patrol streets
on foot and by bike seven days a week. These officers work
closely with Central Precinct, alerting police to criminal
activity.

8. Pedestrian
count up, retailers report strong sales over holidays
Downtown
Portland was the place to shop during the 2007 holiday season
with 25 percent more pedestrians hitting the streets and large
and small retailers reporting strong holiday sales. The increase
in downtown shopping can be contributed to new and remodeled
stores as well as the construction moratorium that allowed
for better access to downtown streets during the holidays.
The overall
pedestrian count increased by 25 percent this year, and most
notably, the corner of SW 4th and Morrison increased by more
than 80 percent and SW 3rd and Taylor, SW Broadway and Morrison,
and SW 10th and Washington increased by 49 percent, 33 percent
and 28 percent, respectively.
The Alliance
conducts these pedestrian traffic counts on 15 intersections
within the Business Improvement District every December and
June. The purpose of the counts is to track pedestrian traffic
volumes in front of key intersections within the downtown
core. For a complete list of intersections and data, visit
the Alliance Web.

Westside Community Court receives donation from Columbia Sportswear
For the
past several years, Columbia Sportswear has donated clothing
and outerwear to the Westside Community Court, which is partly
funded by downtown property owners and the Alliance, and serves
many defendants that are in need.
"Generally,
it's pretty apparent whether or not someone needs something
just from speaking with them for a few minutes and learning
about what's happening in their life," said Court Placement
Coordinator Scott Lyons. Lyons and Dr. Heidi Grant, the Social
Service Coordinator, have kept the program running over the
past few years.
Columbia's
donation this year included coats, jackets, pants, shirts,
shoes and socks. The unused items go to other social service
agencies in the area.

February Fitness Tip: Inspire someone you love!
Are you
one of the lucky few fitness fanatics? You have no problem
getting up every morning and getting to the gym for your workout
or your early morning run. You've been exercising for years
and couldn't imagine ever quitting? As personal trainers,
it's our job to get new clients to the point where they've
caught the exercise bug. This is when clients stop complaining
about how much exercise hurts and how difficult it is to stick
to their program and instead, start commenting on how exercise
makes them feel so good and how they find they need it to
de-stress, find energy or be more productive at work.
Unfortunately,
most people never get hooked on exercise. They give up before
their body starts to experience these wonderful feelings associated
with the exercise "high." A new exerciser needs a ton of support.
On their own, it's so easy to throw in the towel. But if they
have friends, family or a personal trainer helping them with
their pursuit towards a healthier lifestyle, they will be
more likely to succeed.
For those
of you veteran exercisers - those of you who've made it and
succeeded with exercise - we have a challenge for you. Choose
one person in your life - a friend, a parent, a sibling, a
partner, a child, a co-worker, anyone who has expressed a
desire to get fit - and take them under your wings and help
them to get fit. You can share with them some of the obstacles
you've overcome. You could introduce them to new, fun and
exciting activities, share healthy recipes, or sign each other
up to compete in a fun run or walk together. You could both
consult with a personal trainer and do partner training at
a reduced rate for each of you. There are so many ways you
can help out! Consider it your Valentine's Day gift!
Alex
and Sherri McMillan, M.Sc. have received numerous industry
awards including IDEA Fitness Directors of the Year, IDEA
Personal Trainer of the Year, CanFitPro Fitness Presenter
of the Year and BBB Business of the Year. As fitness trainers,
fitness columnists, authors of five books and manuals, stars
in various fitness DVDs, and international fitness presenters,
they are spokespersons for Nike, Nautilus, Twist Conditioning
and PowerBar.
