FROM
THE CHAIR
1. Alliance
events help member businesses grow
By
Steve Holwerda, Chair,
Alliance Board of Directors
Every
year, at Business Leadership Evening, the Alliance honors
a local businessperson whose leadership in our community has
been exemplary. At the same time, the event provides an environment
where business leaders can connect and hear from seasoned
industry professionals on timely and relevant topics. This
year was no exception. The October event was attended by 500
business leaders and it featured TrailBlazers President Larry
Miller as the keynote speaker. In addition, our board proudly
awarded NW Natural CEO Mark Dodson with the William S. Naito
Outstanding Service Award. It was a distinction well deserved,
and Mark's comments in accepting the award were humble and
enlightening.
We consistently
hear through both personal interaction and written responses
to the yearly Alliance membership survey that members value
the networking and business development opportunities offered
through Alliance events. During this economic downturn, networking
and business growth opportunities are more important than
ever. Our extensive networking programs including Business
Leads Exchange, ShopTalk and Business After Hours give members
the opportunity to build relationships with potential clients,
and lay the groundwork for ongoing business relationships
that provide a return on investment for years to come. And
with a sold out crowd at Vestas, last month we kicked off
our newest event, Green Hour, where our members share their
sustainability efforts while highlighting their business.
The Alliance
draws from a rich pool of Portland talent and expertise to
offer educational events to members looking for sound business
advice. Our educational events such as Cornerstones for Success
give small to mid-size business owners tools to help their
companies grow, featuring knowledge and tips from experts
on topics ranging from leveraging a Web site to procuring
the financing your business needs.
By inviting
local business leaders and officials to speak at events, the
Alliance also encourages a sharing of information and ideas
between decision-makers in the government and the business
community. At a recent luncheon, Alliance members met with
U.S. Congressman Greg Walden and Oregon State Treasurer Randall
Edwards to discuss the state and federal response to the financial
crisis on Wall Street. At the Alliance Annual Meeting, ESCO
Corporation Chairman and CEO Steve Pratt shared his business
success story with an audience of close to 1,000 attendees.
Not surprisingly,
we have seen a steady rise in attendance at our events across
the board, from networking and educational events to international
events as well. This is due to increased interest in Alliance
events, as well as an increase in the number of events the
Alliance hosts. The charts below illustrate that increase
in attendance, as well as the number of various meetings and
events we host each year.
I encourage
you to visit the events page on the Alliance Web site to sign
up for some of our upcoming events such as the 2009 Economic
Forecast with noted economist John Mitchell. If you have any
questions about which of these events best fits your business
needs, contact the Membership Department at 503.224.8684.
I hope to see you there!

Alliance Goes to China!
Alliance
Board Member Dennis Rawlinson of the Miller Nash LLP is
leading an Alliance delegation to China this April. The
purpose of the trip is to build a deeper understanding
of the business connections between the Portland-Vancouver
Region and China, and to build relationships that will
enable that relationship to grow in the years ahead. The
Alliance delegation will see how such member companies
as Nike, Intel, Bank of America, CH2MHill, PCC Structurals,
the Port of Portland, ZGF and many others work in China,
and members will talk about opportunities, such as how
the region can export its expertise around sustainability
and green buildings to the growing Chinese economy. In
addition to working with member companies, the Alliance
is working with Mayor-elect Sam Adams to develop the trip
plan.

The
board's endorsements were made based on a process that includes
interviewing the viable candidates for various political
offices and presenting a slate of recommendations to the
board. Two-thirds of the board must agree before an official
position is taken.
Additionally,
the Portland Business Alliance took positions this month
on several ballot measures in conjunction with Associated
Oregon Industries, the Oregon Business Association and the
Oregon Business Council. The organizations took the unusual
step of issuing joint public positions because of the negative
impact the measures 59 and 61 would have on the competitiveness
of Oregon companies. The groups also weighed in on Measure
65.

9. Alliance
engages with Mayor-elect Sam Adams on Portland's response
to economic crisis
Alliance
board members and staff met with Mayor-Elect Sam Adams and
Commissioner Randy Leonard to discuss strategies the city
might adopt to respond to the economic downturn. Adams reviewed
the impact historical recessions have had on city revenue
and asked for input and suggestions on how to manage possible
reductions in the city's budget. Alliance Board Chair Steve
Holwerda urged Adams to plan for a deeper and longer recession
than those the city has experienced in the recent past and
to assume a greater reduction in Business Income Tax revenue.
Additionally,
Alliance members and others urged the city to maintain essential
services and focus on policies and spending priorities that
help create jobs and make the city attractive for new investment.
It was suggested at the meeting that Commissioner Adams meet
with representatives of the city's banking and financial services
community and that meeting was also attended by a number of
Alliance member representatives where some of the same themes
were addressed. Alliance President and CEO Sandra McDonough
is also working with Mayor-Elect Adams on a meeting to engage
small business owners and our neighborhood business associations;
watch for more information in the coming weeks.

Street Access for Everyone (SAFE) Update
The Alliance
continues to work within the Street Access for Everyone (SAFE)
Oversight Committee to improve citywide problems associated
with street disorder and sidewalk nuisances. Over the past
two years, the SAFE recommendations have resulted in implementation
and expansion of multiple Day Access/Resource Centers, additional
public seating and benches in areas designated "high pedestrian
traffic areas," implementation of a public restroom plan,
enactment of a sidewalk obstruction ordinance and creation
of an oversight committee.
As part
of the original agreement of the SAFE recommendations, the
oversight committee will deliver a report to Portland City
Council in November detailing what has occurred since initial
passage of the sidewalk obstruction ordinance in 2007. The
report may also create exposure for the sidewalk obstruction
ordinance, which has been met with some resistance from a
small number of groups or individuals that oppose the ordinance.
The Alliance
and the SAFE Oversight Committee recognize the sidewalk obstruction
ordinance is an integral and essential component to the SAFE
recommendations and is an important engagement tool used by
the Police to help direct people to services and eliminate
nuisance behavior on the sidewalks. The Alliance needs your
support in expressing the importance of continuing the ordinance
as a part of the SAFE recommendations and as a necessary tool
to promote downtown safety and livability for all. Please
write, call or visit our elected Portland City Council officials
and staff between now and mid-November to express your views
about this very important work. For contact information, visit
the Alliance
Web site.

15. Green
Business of the Month: Portland Roasting Company
Portland
Roasting Company's vision for a sustainable world has spread
globally. Through their sustainability program, Farm Friendly
Direct, 85 percent of the organization's green coffee production
helps farms to be self-sustaining through tree planting, construction
of water treatment facilities and community centers, the building
of schools and funding of teacher's salaries among other efforts.
"Farm
Friendly Direct is about much more than just finding the best
coffee," noted Marketing Manager Lisa Hough. "Long-term relationships
are built with farmers and their communities, making for a
steady supply of harvest and community prosperity for years
to come."
On a local
level, Portland Roasting Company has taken the lead in sustainability
by becoming the first coffee roaster in the Pacific Northwest
to offer an eco-friendly to-go cup - the ecotainer. A compostable
sipper, this cup will divert thousands of disposable cups
from area garbage cans and ultimately, landfills. A City of
Portland certified BlueWorks business, the company has also
demonstrated excellence in waste reduction, recycling and
buying environmentally preferred products.

Intel continues commitment to education with $120 million
investment
Intel
has made a commitment to invest $120 million in math and science
education to engage youth around the world - the Intel Foundation's
single largest commitment ever. The investment will include
continued sponsorship of the Intel Science Talent Search (STS)
and Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF),
an outreach program to interest and excite youth and their
teachers about math and science, and an online science community
with a science fair alumni network that includes mentoring.
It also includes significantly increasing international student
participation in the Intel ISEF.
Intel
also recently handed over to 280 local schools checks totaling
$601,960. Every penny of that came from the Intel Involved
Volunteer Matching Grant Program under which Intel donates
$200 for every 20 hours Intel employees spend helping out
at Oregon's schools.
The $601,960
total came from Intel Oregon employees volunteering in schools
throughout the Portland Metro Area during the 2007-2008 school
year. The total is up substantially from the $491,200 donated
for the 2006-2007 school year and is a historical record since
the program's inception.
