Business license fee and business income tax
For three decades, the City of Portland's business license fee and Multnomah County's business income tax have placed particularly hard burdens on the small, locally owned businesses and professional service providers. The Alliance worked with a coalition of neighborhood and other business organizations to support increasing the owner's compensation deduction for both of these taxes and raising the gross receipts exemption. The coalition's outreach to city and county leaders led to much needed tax relief for small, locally owned businesses.
The owner's compensation deduction was increased in 2007, but not to the $125,000 sought by the business community; however, as part of the compromise, city and county officials agreed to further increases in 2008, with the intent of bringing the deduction up to $125,000 within five years. The Alliance is urging local business owners to contact the city and county and ask that the promise to small business owners is kept.
